Can Detroit's Vibrant Arts Scene Save the City?

"Can artists alone revitalize a city in so dire a state?" This very question was posed earlier this spring, when the Detroit Creative Corridor Center and the College for Creative Studies held its second annual Culture Lab Detroit, a three-day event that brings together artists and designers, local and foreign, to discuss “regenerative design in urban areas.” On one of the days, a panel featured the Tanzania-born architect David Adjaye, Chicago-based installation and performance artist Theaster Gates, and Brazilian designers Fernando Campana and Humberto Campana. The interior designer David Stark, who was moderating, got a discussion going, but it wasn’t until the floor opened up to the audience that the dialogue shifted away from the theoretical.
